phil says �the ep was recorded in my house and made up of mostly live percussion performed live by thomas tettey annang. originally from ghana, he moved to belfast some years ago. it just so happens his wife is a close friend of my sisters and that was the first introduction. thomas now runs -releasing rhythms� here in belfast teaching drum classes.
we used a wide selection of traditional african drums that all have their own name, each one has a style and a sound. the rhythms used in this record would stem back to south american rhythms but using african drums. this was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in new york and still has an influence on dance music today.�

having carved out a reputation for some of the finest cosmic house productions on labels like omena, dirt crew and quintessentials, the lithuanian based producer delivers three new cuts on this release, which comes ably backed by a remix from italian producer fabrizio mammarella. on the title track, alex pletnev (ponty mython), goes for breezy synths and wandering melodies over a chugging mechanical beat and an fm style bassline, whilst fabrizio mammarella (bear funk/les disques de la mort) toughens things up slightly on his remix, plunging into a darker sound aesthetic for a great reinterpretation of the original. on �time spiral� an unhurried groove is laced with layer upon layer of meditative synths and percussive rolls for a fat dose of eighties soundtrack vibes, whilst ep closer, �appreciate it while it s not too late�, settles down to a head-nodding pace with funky bass and key melodies and live drum samples for a real earworm of a track.

those wizards of digging psychemagik doing the business once again. hot on the heels of last year s monstrous gotta hold on me / wildman they re letting folks know that they were still out there searching in the darkest recesses of the last 40+ years of popular and unpopular music, and boy oh boy are they good at it! the trip lives up to it s name. the track kicks off with some ultra beefed up psychedelic shenanigans, swirling, cacophonous sounds whirl and sweep and gradually drag us into the holographic tunnel, gradually giving way to some heavyweight drums and percussions and unfurling into a muscular psych-discoid beast. this one will send the kids crazy and will undoubtedly cause some damage in the club, both sonically and mentally. but what is the original? we hear you say... answers on a postcard please. sisters of the moon on the flip-side is a very different animal - all laid back, laconic steel-guitars and thundering slo-mo drums and percussion. the dark side of a rural witchcraft dream exposed here, almost menacing... and then? those vocals spring out of the mix amidst the throbbing sexually charged atmosphere and drag us back into the realm of near reality with sultry moans and groans. this one s woozy alright, but in the best possible way. so wrong, it s right and possibly the natural soundtrack to too many of those strange shots that that guy in the weird hat gave us earlier when we entered that country pub. what guy? i hear you ask.... ultimate freak-disco and deepest druid funk for the discerning and psychedelically inclined record consumer.

milan, italy, 1983. in the midst of the 80s economic boom, which gave an injection of optimism after the heavily political 70s, a group of young local musicians meet every night in a basement to rehearse and record a peculiar breed of italian disco music. originated from the ashes of various other projects, and rooted in the broader jazz-funk tradition, the group creates music which is equally inspired by contemporary fusion as well as by the first wave of the italo-disco sound. over approximately 3 years the band has recorded and played live, until the dismantling of the project towards the mid 80 s. fast forward 35 years and the genuinely mediterranean flavor of qvark s demo recordings are still enjoyable, both for the actual resurgence of the italian disco tradition and for the groovy quirkiness of a project which has been too long forgotten. after an intense work of audio restoration of such tapes, heavily affected by time, early sounds is pleased to present a compilation which is an important find to define the sound of late 70 s and early 80 s italian club sound.-

last summer during an evening spent with my friend dj topha, we came upon the everlasting subject of old versus new. i m finding so much great music right now, and not just digging back in time but exploring our own timeline geographically too, he said, the level of production these days is rising fast. you have to check out these snippets from a new label based in casablanca. not long after, in an interesting twist of fate, driss bennis and i began to exchange music: i shared his soundcloud for the first casa voyager release, and he sent me a promo copy which i played out a lot. it seemed only logical to ask him for music for basic moves. later that summer we met in paris for a convivial back to back at dawidu s shop, te iubesc records and sapology. it was as simple as that, and in a few weeks basic moves 04 was ready. night train and overseas blew me away by their quality - the tracks are retro-esque yet fresh, and stem from a loose approach to electro. their arrangements are very smart, not everything is revealed the first time round. the more you listen, the more you understand that the power of the tracks lies in the details. together with ailsa s artwork, stefan s cut and chris mixes the release fell so smoothly into place. i have come to realise how important it is for the scene to release recently produced music as well as treasures from the past. you can t build a community by only playing old records. it s about a combination, about finding gems that glide together. old and new. and for that, i think both these dj booth tracks really fit the bill.

the third installment from barcelona�s nitsa club record label digs into uncharted territories. if the first release was a strong and balanced mixture between ebm and minimal techno and the second one paid a heartfelt and honest homage to detroit electronic heroes, sau poler�s �orchestron� decides to draw a line between emotional melodies and techno rhythms while keeping a strong peak time momentum. young producer from badalona who already released on labels like atomnation, modern obscure music and lo recordings, sau knows how to build a banger with soul without being too cheesy. with an insane pulsating baseline, some high pitched synth swirls and a crispy rhythm that resembles a krautrock drum machine, �orchestron� will be played a lot during the next months.
on the b-side there�s a remix from estrato aurora. 50% of lontano, legendary electronic band during the early 00�s in valencia, jaime romero takes away the cheerful playful disco that made him famous to a psychedelic and obsessive deep techno.

it s been a while since we last heard from flord king, who has popped up on junk yard connections as well as regularly featuring on lyssna. it s the latter label he returns to now, and he s got some focused, stripped down club fare to impart. -el klassiko- is a shuffling, funky minimal house jam with some wriggling melodies and a subby bass throb, while -avocado in blue- does a quirkier turn with some crafty synth flex that really stands out from the crowd. -bob- too is a distinctive cut with some detailed layers of dubby ripples and errant computer debris quivering and shaking over the mellow pads and steady beat. -deep diff- twists out some cheeky bass and an overall emotive mood that ends the record on a poignant tip.

a firm favourite with the hot creation camp, jey kurmis returns to the label with his jessycat ep. following acclaimed releases lil� nic french, kari and not too flabbeh on the imprint, we once again see the talented producer at the top of his game. the ep stays true to jey�s trademark sound as the producer delivers three tracks to take the dancefloor through to the small hours. the ep opens with jessycat, a bubbling tribal affair that implores you to move. an array of vocals bleeds into the record taking you on a journey to outer space. fien features co-producers nukov & yelmet and takes a darker turn with a rumbling bass and intense vocals that state �my head spinning like a merry go�. the outer space sounds continue into closing track vanstone, unfolding with a swinging bass and distorted stabs. part of the industry from more than a decade, jey kurmis has previously released on labels such as, moon harbour, leftroom and kaluki. taking his dj skills to new levels he has played the world�s hottest parties- from sonar to bpm, and the warehouse project to dc10. the leed�s based music maker has also commanded residencies at do not sleep and paradise.

chicago damn is the latest esteemed producer to shore up at marcel vogel s intimate friends label, following the hypoleon ep with some forthright, sample heavy funk house concoctions that nod to his other work on wolf music and the like. -bunny hoppin- is a rowdy but soulful belter with a peppy tempo and an addictive line in looped up samples, while -flush- takes things slower and dustier without getting too lost in the undergrowth. -the truth- lays its samples out in bold, bright brushstrokes with a pattering, psyched out undercurrent for deeper, sunkissed moments, and then -tipsy- finishes the ep off in a playful tryst of re-pitched piano trills and scuffed beats.

pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wight�s powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. he�s released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half

deeply concerned with the here and now versus sister label was/is electro archaeology, is/was delivers the goods once again with this various artists 12- zeroed in on the pittsburgh scene. you can feel the steel city tension reverberating in naeem s edgy beatdown -forward facing-, while hits only takes things in a slightly cleaner, modernist direction that aligns with some of the uk soundsystem interpretations of electro that have emerged in recent years. shawn rudiman takes control for the b side with two jams that tip their cap to the veteran producer s long and accomplished career, but they sound as fresh as anything else on the record too. -derelict- is a gnarly, bloated banger of a track, and -asimolar- takes the route towards cybotron, kraftwerk and the truly foundational version of electro in all its lysergic glory.

just as magnified record grooves reveal dust constellations and lunar landscapes, so too does godblesscomputers� third album. �solchi� is a deep search into previous moments in lorenzo nada�s lifetime, influenced by the presence and power of music. his process began with the recovery of some old cassettes, mixtapes nearly forgotten, audio recording of voices from his childhood, and lots of dusty jazz, soul, and hip-hop records. as the starting point of this travel merge with its end, past and present combine to form gbc�s current sound. warm electronic production rooted by grooving bass lines form the core of a kaleidoscope of sixteen tracks, colored by synthesizers, guitar echoes, scratches, samples, fading voices and kalimba. the album is a collection of sixteen stories, sixteen soundscapes, each of them gbc�s tribute to the path taken thus far, an homage to his love for music. the recording and studio work took place over a year, with the adding and subtracting of many elements. for this project, gbc invited several musicians into his home studio, both old friends and new. they helped to recreate the sounds of the original recovered recording, as well as add fresh ideas to the project.
